CATL to Begin Large-Scale Production of Sodium-Ion Batteries by 2026
CATL, the world's largest battery manufacturer, announced at its year-end conference in Ningde that it will begin large-scale production of sodium-ion batteries by 2026. These batteries will be used in various sectors, including transportation, electric vehicles, commercial electric vehicles, and energy storage systems.
CATL previously launched a dedicated brand, Naxtra, for sodium-ion technology in April, and large-scale production has already started. The sodium-ion batteries offer advantages such as operation across a wide temperature range (-40 °C to 70 °C), lower production costs, longer lifespan, and higher safety standards.
However, they have lower energy density, resulting in larger and heavier batteries. CATL recently introduced a sodium-ion battery for electric vehicles with a range of 500 km, achieving an energy density of 175 kWh/kg. These batteries surpass the latest Chinese national standards for electric vehicle batteries, set to take effect in mid-2026.
