Cegeka to Invest €40 Million in Underground Data Center in Belgian Limburg

Cegeka is investing €40 million ($46.9 million) to construct an underground data center in Belgian Limburg, with an initial capacity of 4MW, which is four times that of its largest existing data center in the region. The company aims to scale capacity to between 10MW and 15MW in response to increasing demand for compute power from AI applications.

The decision to build underground is intended to mitigate risks from drones, sabotage, and cyber threats. Additionally, Cegeka is investing in renewable energy projects, including a wind turbine and a solar park, to support its goal of achieving climate-neutral operations by 2030. These initiatives are projected to generate sufficient green electricity by 2026 to meet the energy needs of its data centers and operations in Belgium and the Netherlands.
