Central Coast Water Board Approves Diablo Canyon Wastewater Permit and Certification

WATER INFRASTRUCTURE & DESALINATION

The Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board has unanimously approved a five-year National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit for Diablo Canyon Power Plant, permitting the discharge of up to 2.76 billion gallons of wastewater per day into the Pacific Ocean. This wastewater comprises cooling water, treated process water, desalination brine, stormwater, and treated domestic wastewater.

The permit establishes pollutant limits and mandates PG&E to monitor ecological impacts. The board also approved a Section 401 Water Quality Certification, ensuring compliance with the Clean Water Act.

PG&E's 20-year license renewal application is pending with the NRC, with decisions expected this spring. Legislative action is required for continued operations beyond 2030, and the NPDES permit will be reviewed again.
