Central Elgin Advances Redevelopment of Former St. Thomas Psychiatric Hospital Lands for Residential Growth
Central Elgin is progressing plans to redevelop the former St. Thomas Psychiatric Hospital lands into over 3,500 homes for approximately 9,000 people. A request for proposals has been issued to private developers, with council approval expected in June 2026. The 168-hectare site is designated for urban growth, incorporating residential neighborhoods, amenities, and preserving historical structures. The project is supported by a recent compensation agreement related to a nearby electric vehicle battery plant, which aims to create significant economic growth and job opportunities.
