Centrica and X Energy Forge Partnership for Advanced Modular Nuclear Reactors in the UK

Centrica and X Energy have announced an ambitious joint development agreement, marking a significant step towards deploying advanced modular reactors (AMRs) in the UK. The partnership has identified Hartlepool, adjacent to the current nuclear power station, as the preferred site for this transformative project, which aims to bring up to 6 gigawatts of clean energy online. This initiative is poised to deliver substantial economic benefits, potentially generating over $12 billion in lifetime value and providing enough power for approximately 1.5 million homes.

As the existing Hartlepool facility is set to cease operations in 2028, the introduction of a 12-unit build of X Energy's XE 100 reactors will not only help retain the skilled workforce but also revitalize the local infrastructure. The government's designation of Hartlepool for new nuclear development under its national policy underscores the site's strategic importance. The new reactors will also facilitate high-temperature heat provision, a crucial factor for heavy industries in the region, including emerging projects like the sustainable aviation fuel plant in Teesside.

Centrica is committed to investing in this clean energy transition, with initial project capital aimed at commencing full-scale construction by 2026, contingent upon regulatory approval. The timeline anticipates the first electricity generation by the mid-2030s. The companies are actively seeking additional equity partners and construction firms to establish a UK-based development company for this and future projects.

The XE 100 reactor, a high-temperature gas-cooled reactor designed by X Energy, represents a pioneering approach to nuclear energy, capable of delivering both electricity and industrial heat. Its modular design promises not only enhanced efficiency but also shortened construction timelines and more predictable costs compared to traditional large-scale nuclear projects.
