CER Recommends Approval for Westcoast Energy's Sunrise Expansion Project
Westcoast Energy's Sunrise Expansion Program has received a recommendation for approval from the CER, advancing Canadian gas access to global export markets. This project aims to enhance the southern part of the pipeline network to meet rising demand, particularly from the Woodfibre LNG terminal under construction on the Pacific coast.

The Canada Energy Regulator (CER) has recommended the Sunrise Expansion Program, a critical step for Westcoast Energy in enhancing its natural gas infrastructure in British Columbia. The project will strengthen the southern segment of the existing pipeline system through additional loops and increased compressor capacity, primarily serving the Woodfibre LNG terminal.
This terminal is central to the strategy of exporting Canadian natural gas as LNG to the Asia-Pacific region. The final decision rests with the Canadian government, marking the last major hurdle before construction can begin.
The integration of long-term transportation contracts is expected to bolster Westcoast Energy's earnings and credit rating, reinforcing its role in facilitating Canadian energy exports. Synchronization with the Woodfibre project is crucial for maximizing capacity utilization upon startup.
