Cespira and Volvo Group Finalize Hydrogen Engine Development Agreement
Cespira and Volvo Group's agreement aims to integrate HPDI™ technology into Volvo's 13-litre engine for hydrogen use, targeting a 2030 launch. The project enhances low-carbon solutions in heavy-duty transport, supporting emission reductions while maintaining performance.

Cespira, a joint venture of Westport Fuel Systems and Volvo Group, has signed an agreement with Volvo Group to finalize the development of the HPDI™ fuel system for hydrogen applications in Volvo's 13-litre engine. The technology enables direct injection of hydrogen at high pressures, providing diesel-equivalent performance with zero carbon emissions.
Commercial launch is targeted before 2030, with current on-road testing for Volvo trucks. The HPDI system accommodates varying hydrogen compositions, offering advantages over fuel-cell systems. This collaboration underscores a commitment to low-carbon transport solutions and positions the industry for future renewable fuel adaptations.
