Cherokee Tribal Council Institutes Indefinite Moratorium on Data Centers
The Dinilawigi has enacted an indefinite moratorium on data centers on the lands of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI). This decision addresses concerns regarding environmental impact, resource utilization, and community health.

The Dinilawigi approved Ord. No. 158 (2026) on May 7, 2026, with a unanimous vote of 11-0, to impose an indefinite moratorium on data centers. The ordinance cites the detrimental effects of high-impact digital infrastructure on local communities, including excessive water usage and noise pollution that affects residents' health.
Community discussions highlighted the importance of preserving natural resources and cultural values. Concerns were raised about the inability to recycle polluted water and the adverse effects of data centers on local ecosystems. The Eastern Cherokee Organization facilitated a town hall to discuss these impacts, emphasizing the need for clean water and air.
