Chile Shifts Focus from Green Hydrogen to Data Centers Amid Global Slowdown
Chile's energy department proposes reallocating land for green hydrogen to large data centers due to a slowdown in the hydrogen sector. This shift aims to utilize existing renewable energy capacity for high-consumption operations like those from Google and AWS until the hydrogen market recovers.

The Chilean government is considering repurposing land designated for green hydrogen projects to accommodate data centers, responding to a decrease in global hydrogen activity. This strategy, put forth by the energy department, is motivated by postponed investment decisions and challenges in securing long-term buyers in the hydrogen market.
Data centers could leverage the substantial renewable energy capacity initially intended for hydrogen production. Despite this interim solution, the Chilean government maintains its commitment to green hydrogen, aiming for domestic production of 100,000-200,000 tons annually by 2035, alongside export goals of 300,000-700,000 tons. This change reflects a broader trend where data centers are becoming pivotal in driving renewable energy investments.
