China Demonstrates Wireless Power Transfer to Drones in Flight
Xidian University has achieved stable wireless power transmission of 143 watts to a drone in flight, marking a significant milestone in the field. This development, announced on May 18, 2026, shifts the discourse on wireless energy transfer by successfully powering a moving aerial target without interruption.

On May 18, 2026, Xidian University demonstrated the ability to deliver 143 watts of stable electrical power to a drone in flight at a speed of 30 km/h using microwave energy. The system utilizes a closed-loop feedback mechanism where the drone's receiver continually sends signals to adjust the beam's direction, ensuring constant energy transfer.
Although 143 watts indicates stable reception, it does not guarantee a proportional increase in battery charge due to energy consumption during flight. The project achieved a notable increase in transmission efficiency from 15% to 20.8%, attributed to better beam shaping and advanced electronics.
This technology has potential applications in crisis zones and industrial inspections but faces challenges such as component radiation resistance and safety regulations. Countries such as the USA and members of the European Space Agency are pursuing similar technologies with varying focuses.
