China Develops AI Simulation with One Billion Agents for Social Behavior Studies

The Light Society project by Chinese researchers utilizes one billion virtual agents to study opinion spread in a social network. Unlike traditional models requiring extensive computing resources, this new framework employs smaller AI models to simulate behavior, using a lightweight MLP model and a precomputed lookup system.

The simulation examines various statements, including the effects of AI automation on employment and perceptions of flat Earth claims, across 100 interaction rounds. The results indicate that initial beliefs of influencers significantly affect the wider population's opinions, highlighting potential applications in understanding misinformation and societal behavior. However, researchers caution against treating simulated populations as accurate representations of real humans, as biases can affect outcomes.
