China Invests Over $20 Billion in Green Energy Through Belt and Road Initiative in H1 2026
China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) directed more than $20 billion towards green energy projects in the first half of 2026, with Africa as the primary recipient. Despite criticisms regarding debt sustainability and market access, African nations continue to seek partnerships under the BRI framework.

In the first half of 2026, China's investment in green energy through the Belt and Road Initiative exceeded $20 billion, matching the total from all of 2025. Africa has emerged as a primary destination for these investments, with total Chinese investments in the continent reaching a record $33.5 billion, nearly triple that of the first half of 2025.
The focus on green energy is reflected globally, with 56% of China's energy sector involvement under BRI dedicated to this area. Notably, private sector participation has surged to 48% in 2026 from 13% in 2022.
The geopolitical climate has accelerated China's energy collaborations in North Africa, particularly with Egypt and Morocco, emphasizing renewable energy and hydrogen projects. New investments include $14.8 billion in Ethiopia and $12.2 billion in Egypt, signifying a shift towards comprehensive energy development across the region. These trends suggest an increasing integration of China's energy strategy with local industrial capabilities.
