China Launches Advanced Tunneling Machine with Dual Modes for Enhanced Efficiency
China has introduced the world's first boring and blasting machine (BBM), designed to enhance tunneling speed by 30%. This innovation aims to tackle complex geological challenges, improving safety and construction efficiency in large tunnel projects.

The BBM, developed through collaboration between Tsinghua University and China Railway Science & Industry Group (CRSIC), was unveiled in Wuhan, Hubei Province. This machine integrates tunnel boring and traditional blasting techniques, allowing it to adapt to varying underground conditions.
Capable of switching excavation methods based on rock types, the BBM is expected to increase excavation efficiency by 30% compared to conventional machines. With features like retractable side cutters and an explosion-proof shield, the BBM addresses major engineering challenges in tunneling.
The machine will first be tested at a pumped-storage hydropower project to gather performance data. This development represents a significant advancement in China's tunneling technology, potentially influencing global engineering practices.
