China Launches High-Altitude Green Computing Center at Lianghekou Hydropower Plant
China's Lianghekou Hydropower Plant, operational since December 2025, features the world's first high-altitude, subterranean computing center. This facility leverages hydropower for energy-efficient computing, serving both internal and external applications, including AI-driven weather forecasting and smart city initiatives.

The Lianghekou Hydropower Plant in Sichuan features an innovative computing center that operates at 2,800 meters elevation, utilizing repurposed tunnels for energy-efficient computing. This project, launched in March 2025 by Yalong River Hydropower Development Co., Ltd. and China Telecom, utilizes 2,000 computing chips to deliver processing power equivalent to 240 million office computers.
The facility maintains a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) below 1.2, making it one of the most efficient in China. The integrated system includes solar power stations, ensuring year-round green electricity supply, while also supporting scientific research through partnerships with institutions like the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
