China Launches World's First GWh-Scale Supercapacitor-Energy Storage Project in Jiayuguan

SOLAR ENERGYENERGY STORAGE

China has successfully connected the Jiayuguan NingSheng project, the world's first GWh-scale supercapacitor-energy storage system, to the grid. This hybrid system, which combines 475 MW of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries with a 25 MW supercapacitor, is designed to enhance grid stability and support renewable energy integration.

The project, invested in by China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), achieved grid connection on December 30, 2025, after construction began in September 2024. Located in Jiayuguan, Gansu province, the facility connects to the Jiayuguan Jiaxi solar power aggregation station via a 330 kV transmission line. The supercapacitor component, the largest of its kind in China, enables rapid response for frequency regulation and grid stabilization, while the hybrid design addresses both energy-type and power-type requirements critical for high-renewables systems.
