China Launches World's First Offshore Wind Direct-Linked Underwater Data Center in Shanghai

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTUREWIND ENERGY

The world's first underwater data center linked to offshore wind power is operational in Shanghai's Lingang Special Area. Built by CCCC Third Harbor Engineering Co, it represents a 1.6 billion yuan investment with a total capacity of 24 megawatts, developed in two phases.

The first phase has a capacity of 2.3 megawatts with a rebuilt control center, one underwater data module, and two submarine cables. The project features direct offshore wind connection and seawater cooling, with over 95% renewable energy usage and a PUE below 1.15.

Engineers created a new structure to withstand local marine challenges, utilizing a precise lifting technique to install the data cabin. Electricity from offshore turbines powers the facility, enhancing green computing capabilities.
