China Medical Team Arrives in Rwanda Amid Lunar New Year Celebrations, Continuing 45-Year Medical Partnership
On January 22, 2026, Rwanda welcomed a new China Medical Team (CMT) of 19 professionals from Inner Mongolia, marking the continuation of a 45-year medical exchange program. The medics will be deployed to Kibungo and Masaka hospitals after two months of Kinyarwanda training.
Chinese Ambassador Gao Wenqi highlighted the significance of this partnership, linking it to strong economic and cultural ties, including projects like the Masaka Hospital and Nyabarongo Hydropower Plant. The event coincided with the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Rwanda, and emphasized shared historical experiences.
Since 1982, Inner Mongolia has sent 26 medical teams to Rwanda, treating over 730,000 patients. The outgoing 25th medical team conducted 67 technical training sessions and free clinics benefiting over 2,000 Rwandans. Future efforts will focus on sustainable healthcare development in Rwanda.
