China Sets Target for Water Electrolysis Hydrogen Production Efficiency by 2028
Four Chinese ministries issued an 'Implementation Plan for High-Quality Development of Energy-Saving Equipment' aiming for water electrolysis hydrogen production equipment to achieve a DC power consumption of less than 4.2 kWh/Nm³ by 2028. The plan encourages the development of high-efficiency, low-cost equipment and the improvement of materials and designs.

On March 20, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the National Development and Reform Commission, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, and the National Energy Administration released an 'Implementation Plan for High-Quality Development of Energy-Saving Equipment (2026-2028).' The plan mandates that by 2028, DC power consumption for mass-produced water electrolysis hydrogen production equipment must be below 4.2 kWh/Nm³. It promotes advancements in electrode and membrane materials, optimizes electrolyzer designs, and enhances the efficiency of alkaline and proton exchange membrane electrolyzers.
