China's J-16D EW Aircraft Flies with PL-15 Missiles for the First Time
The People's Liberation Army Air Force's J-16D electronic warfare aircraft was observed flying with PL-15 air-to-air missiles for the first time on March 17, 2026. This variant, which lacks an Infrared Search and Track system but features electronic warfare wingtip pods, aims to bolster the electronic warfare capabilities of the J-20 stealth fighter. The PL-15 missile, known for its range exceeding 200 km, is already integrated into the standard J-16 model.

This specialized variant of the J-16, a modified version of the Su-27, lacks the Infrared Search and Track system but includes wingtip pods for electronic warfare.
The J-16D has also been seen with various jamming pods. The PL-15 missile has a reported range of over 200 km and is already integrated into the standard J-16 variant. Experts believe the J-16D's role is to enhance the electronic warfare capabilities of the J-20 stealth fighter.
