China's Shipping Container Industry Expands into Diverse Sectors
In 2024, China's container output reached 8.1 million TEUs, a 268.2% increase, dominating global production. The industry's evolution is driven by new energy demands and innovative applications in urban development and agriculture.

China's shipping container industry produced over 8.1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2024, marking a 268.2% year-on-year increase. The country represents 96% of global container production, highlighting its dominance in this sector.
Containers are being repurposed for applications such as energy storage, modular buildings, and agricultural technology. For instance, a State Grid project in Cixi has transformed a 12,000 square meter area into a compact energy system within a single container.
Additionally, high-tech farming solutions are being implemented in containers at the PUKU Smart Agriculture Park in Hangzhou, where crops are grown under controlled conditions. The adaptability of shipping containers into multifunctional platforms signifies a significant shift in their role from logistics to urban and industrial applications, with potential risks related to meeting diverse international standards.
