China's Tianwen 3 Mars Sample Return Mission Set for 2028 Launch
China's CNSA plans to launch the Tianwen 3 mission in 2028, aiming for the first Mars samples to return by 2031. This positions China to potentially achieve a significant milestone ahead of Western efforts, which face delays and uncertainties regarding their Mars Sample Return projects.

The China National Space Administration (CNSA) is preparing the Tianwen 3 mission for launch in 2028, targeting the return of Martian samples as early as 2031. The mission will utilize two Long March 5 rockets from the Wenchang Space Launch Center and will involve five main hardware components: a lander, ascender, service capsule, orbiter, and a reentry module.
Notably, the orbiter will carry four instruments designed to analyze Martian atmospheric composition and search for life. In contrast, the U.S. and Europe continue to face challenges with their Mars Sample Return missions, which may not commence until the 2040s, highlighting a competitive gap in space exploration capabilities.
