Chinese Battery Makers Shift Focus to Sodium-Ion Technology Amid Lithium Supply Concerns
Chinese manufacturers are advancing sodium-ion battery technology as a response to the supply chain vulnerabilities of lithium-ion batteries. Sodium, more abundant and cost-effective, offers advantages like better performance in cold temperatures and faster charging. Major players like CATL and BYD are already in mass production, targeting both electric vehicles and energy storage applications. The Chinese government is promoting sodium-ion batteries in utility-scale energy storage, with plans to expand usage from 2025 to 2027.

Chinese battery manufacturers are increasingly investing in sodium-ion technology to reduce reliance on lithium-ion batteries. Sodium, being abundant and easier to source, mitigates supply chain risks associated with lithium.
Leading companies like CATL and BYD are mass-producing sodium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage, with CATL planning to market its Naxtra batteries in collaboration with Chang'an Automobile. Sodium-ion batteries are expected to complement lithium-ion batteries due to differing characteristics.
The Chinese government aims to expand sodium-ion battery usage in energy storage from 2025 to 2027, supporting renewable energy integration. HiNa Battery Technology is also making strides in this sector with large-scale energy storage projects.
