City Power Invests R360 Million to Replace Copper Power Lines with Aluminium Conductors
City Power has allocated over R267 million in the last four years and plans an additional R360 million to replace low voltage copper overhead power lines with aluminium conductors. This initiative aims to reduce power outages and combat cable theft, which incurs annual losses of approximately R5 billion for the economy.

City Power has committed R360 million to upgrade low voltage lines to aluminium conductors over the next three financial years, cumulatively exceeding R627 million in a seven-year span. The project was initiated under the 90-Day Mayoral Programme in 2011, targeting areas with high cable theft and frequent outages.
Areas such as Lombardy East, Mayfair, and Sandringham have seen implementation of aerial bundle conductors (ABC), which are less valuable to thieves and demonstrate increased durability against environmental factors. In 2015/16, R60 million will be allocated to this initiative, with R160 million in the following year and R140 million in 2017/18. The impact of copper theft and infrastructure decay remains a significant challenge, highlighting the need for continued investment in reliable electricity distribution.
