Civil Works at Didcot Substation Enhance UK's Clean Energy and AI Goals
Trant Engineering has completed preliminary civil works at Didcot Substation, crucial for connecting data centers and a BESS to the grid. This infrastructure upgrade is vital for supporting the UK's digital economy and meeting rising demand for zero-carbon power.

Preliminary civil works at Didcot Substation are complete, enabling the connection of data centers and a battery energy storage system (BESS) to the grid. The project, part of National Grid's initiative, involves extending the existing 400kV substation with three new transformers and a 132kV GIS substation.
Trant Engineering, subcontracted by Linxon, undertook the civil works, which included CFA piling and major concrete pours for the GIS building basement. The new GIS facility incorporates Hitachi Energy's EconiQ switchgear technology, aiming for a 50% reduction in SF6 emissions by 2030. This development is significant for the UK's clean energy transition and digital infrastructure.
