CJ Bio America Inc. to Pay Over $90K for Fish Kill Incident in Iowa
CJ Bio America Inc. has consented to pay $90,419 to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources following a fish kill caused by a spill. The incident, resulting in the death of approximately 72,000 fish, highlights critical gaps in spill prevention measures within the biotechnology industry.

In April 2025, CJ Bio America Inc. experienced a spill at its Fort Dodge plant, leading to elevated ammonia levels in Lizard Creek and the death of nearly 72,000 fish. The company will pay $73,819 in restitution for the fish kill, along with over $9,100 for investigative costs and a $7,500 administrative penalty, totaling $90,419.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources noted inadequate spill prevention measures and mandated improvements, including the installation of monitoring devices and larger berms. This incident underscores the importance of rigorous safety protocols in the biotechnology sector to prevent environmental damage and regulatory penalties.
