ClassNK Grants AiP for World's First Ammonia-Fuelled Bulker with Type B Tank
ClassNK has approved an innovative ammonia-fuelled Panamax bulk carrier with a type B fuel tank design. This certification highlights a pivotal shift in the maritime industry towards safer and more efficient fuel storage solutions amid decarbonisation efforts.

ClassNK has granted approval in principle (AiP) for a novel ammonia-fuelled Panamax bulk carrier featuring a type B independent fuel tank on the exposed stern deck. This design, created by Japan's Planning and Design Center for Greener Ships (GSC), is the first of its kind.
The type B tank design offers enhanced volumetric efficiency and safety compared to traditional cylindrical tanks, allowing for more effective large-capacity storage. It complies with IMO's safety guidelines for ammonia-fuelled vessels and addresses supply chain challenges associated with conventional tank manufacturing. The shift towards type B tanks signals a broader industry trend focused on decarbonisation and sustainable fuel alternatives.
