Clean Energy Group Advocates for 90 MW Battery Installation at Calpine Gas Unit in New Jersey

Clean Energy Group has urged New Jersey regulators to require Calpine Mid-Atlantic Generation to install a minimum 90 MW, 720 MWh battery storage system at its gas-fired generating unit in Vineland, New Jersey, to reduce emissions. The proposed battery system could cover 82% of operational events and decrease NO, CO, and SO emissions by approximately 55%.

The group asserts that a 12-hour battery system could reduce emissions by over 70%. Under New Jersey's Environmental Justice Law, Calpine must publish an environmental justice impact statement and respond to public comments for its Title V operating permit renewal.

Clean Energy Group's analysis indicates hybridizing the gas unit with battery storage is economically and technically feasible, given the unit's existing capacity and land availability. The group also highlighted the cost-effectiveness of battery systems and their potential to charge during high renewable energy production, thus minimizing emissions.
