Cleantech Startups Develop Gas-Free Fertilizer Solutions Amid Global Supply Crisis
Global fertilizer supply is under threat due to geopolitical tensions, significantly impacting food security in regions like Myanmar and Ethiopia. With 30% of the global urea trade disrupted and costs soaring, innovative startups like Nitricity, NitroVolt, and NitroCapt are developing alternative fertilizer production methods that do not rely on natural gas, aiming to revolutionize the industry. These companies are exploring various technologies, including electrochemical processes and plasma-based systems, to produce nitrogen fertilizers sustainably.

The ongoing global fertilizer crisis is exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, particularly the Iran conflict, leading to significant disruptions in supply chains and rising costs. Fertilizer shortages are predicted to worsen in countries like Myanmar and Ethiopia, where reliance on gas-based fertilizers is high.
In response, three startups—Nitricity, NitroVolt, and NitroCapt—are pioneering gas-free fertilizer production methods. Nitricity uses an electrochemical process with biomass; NitroVolt generates green ammonia from wind energy; and NitroCapt employs plasma technology.
These innovations aim to decouple fertilizer production from fossil fuel prices, addressing both environmental concerns and food security. The industrial supply chain for renewable technologies is also evolving, indicating a shift towards sustainable fertilizer solutions.
