Cleve Hill Solar Plant Starts Operations Amid Local Controversy
The Cleve Hill solar facility, generating power for 102,000 homes, is operational with a capacity of 373 MW, less than a coal power station. Tesco and Shell have secured long-term corporate agreements for power purchase, raising concerns from local residents and environmental groups.

The Cleve Hill solar farm has begun operations, generating power for approximately 102,000 homes through 550,000 solar panels and a capacity of 373 MW. Despite its operation, the facility produces less energy than average coal power stations, which typically output around 500 MW.
Tesco has acquired 65% of the generated power, while Shell has purchased the remaining 35%. Local authority Swale Borough Council initially refused permission for a Battery Energy Storage System, but this was overturned on appeal.
Residents and Kent Wildlife Trust have expressed concerns regarding the project's environmental impact and design, particularly regarding wildlife habitats and flood risks. The trust noted improvements in site management and buffers amid ongoing concerns about the landscape's industrial appearance.
