CNMC Launches Comprehensive Audit of Spain's Electricity Network to Combat Speculation
The CNMC is conducting an extensive audit of Spain's electricity network to assess the current access requests from energy companies. This report aims to identify duplicates and clarify the situation regarding network congestion. The audit includes 800,000 km of electric networks managed by various companies, with a focus on high, medium, and low tension lines. The investigation seeks to diagnose issues and address potential speculation in access permits, which have surged in recent years, particularly for data centers and renewable projects.

The CNMC is performing a detailed audit of Spain's electricity network to assess the number of current access requests and identify potential duplications. This is the first comprehensive analysis of its kind in Spain, covering approximately 800,000 km of electric networks managed by companies like Endesa, Iberdrola, Naturgy, and EDP.
Recent years have seen a surge in requests for access permits, driven by various projects, including data centers and renewable energy initiatives. The audit aims to diagnose the extent of network congestion and determine the causes, with the potential for regulatory measures against speculation. The findings will be shared with the government and may lead to a re-evaluation of existing permits to streamline the network.
