Coal India Dissolves Solar Manufacturing Subsidiary, Focuses on Renewable Energy Expansion
Coal India has dissolved its CIL Solar PV subsidiary, halting plans for a 4 GW solar manufacturing facility. The company remains committed to expanding its renewable energy capacity, targeting 3 GW by FY28 and 9.5 GW by FY30.

Coal India has officially dissolved CIL Solar PV, ceasing plans for a 4 GW solar manufacturing facility. The decision reflects a strategic pivot away from solar equipment production while maintaining an aggressive focus on renewable energy.
The company aims to increase its renewable capacity to 3 GW by FY28 and 9.5 GW by FY30. Additionally, Coal India has entered the battery energy storage systems (BESS) market, recently awarded a contract by GRIDCO for four projects totaling 80 MW/320 MWh in Odisha.
In March 2026, it secured a 187.5 MW/750 MWh BESS project in Telangana at a tariff of INR 3.14 lakh/MW/month. This shift indicates a potential risk of reduced influence in solar manufacturing but could enhance competitive positioning in energy storage.
