Cochin International Airport to Launch Hydrogen-Powered Buses in India’s First Initiative
Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) will be the first airport in India to operate hydrogen-powered buses, following a Memorandum of Agreement with the Kerala Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster (HVIC) Foundation. The initiative, part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, includes the procurement of three hydrogen fuel cell electric buses, funded by the K-HVIC Foundation, and aims to enhance passenger convenience while reducing emissions. A green hydrogen plant by CIAL and BPCL will supply the necessary fuel for the buses.

Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL) will become India's first airport to operate hydrogen-powered buses for passenger transport. A Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed between the Kerala Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster (HVIC) Foundation and CIAL, facilitated by Kerala Electricity Minister K.
Krishnankutty and Industries Minister P. Rajeeve. The agreement includes the procurement of three hydrogen fuel cell electric buses as part of the Kerala Hydrogen Valley initiative under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
The K-HVIC Foundation will provide funding, capped at ₹2.90 crore per bus and ₹8.7 crore total. Bus procurement is set for completion within 12 months, with CIAL owning the buses and managing operational expenses.
The project aims to enhance passenger convenience and reduce emissions. A green hydrogen plant by CIAL and BPCL will supply fuel for the buses, with necessary approvals in place for implementation.
