Coin Residents Oppose Development Threatening Malaga Aquifer
Residents in Coin, Malaga, are mobilizing against development proposals that jeopardize their main aquifer. The initiatives, including solar farms and a tourism project, raise concerns about water supply management and environmental impact.

Residents in Coin, Malaga, are campaigning against two major development projects that threaten the town's primary aquifer, crucial for supplying water to its 25,000 residents. These projects include a 267 million euro adventure park targeting the Sierra Blanca aquifer recharge zone and seven photovoltaic plants covering over 1,000 hectares, which could generate up to 560 MW.
Local authorities are facing backlash as campaigners accuse them of inadequate environmental assessments and lack of public consultations. There are fears of forced expropriations of farmland, which is critical for both food production and local ecosystems. The Junta de Andalucia has been urged to prioritize aquifer protection and reject fast-tracked approvals.
