Colombia Aims to Boost Green Hydrogen Production Amid Challenges in Infrastructure and Costs
Colombia's President Gustavo Petro emphasizes the country's potential in green hydrogen production, aiming to expand capacity significantly by 2030. Current production has increased twelvefold, largely driven by Ecopetrol. Major projects include the Coral plant in Cartagena, which will produce 800 tons of hydrogen annually. However, challenges persist in infrastructure, pricing, and social issues in regions like La Guajira. The government is investing over $40 billion into hydrogen initiatives and plans to enhance desalination technologies alongside hydrogen production.

Colombia aims to enhance its green hydrogen production, with President Gustavo Petro highlighting its potential role in global clean energy. Hydrogen production increased twelvefold from 2023 to 2024, primarily by Ecopetrol, which produces 130,000 tons annually.
The Coral project in Cartagena, set to begin operations soon, will produce 800 tons per year using efficient PEM electrolysis. Despite the ambitious plans, Colombia faces challenges, including infrastructure for transport and social issues in regions with high production potential, like La Guajira. The government plans to invest over $40 billion into hydrogen projects and aims for competitive production costs by 2030.
