Colombia Allocates $200 Million for Bodyguard Services Amid Security Challenges
Colombia's National Protection Unit (UNP) will allocate over 740 billion pesos (approximately 200 million dollars) in 2026 to fund around 6,500 protection schemes for 8,000 individuals. A military modernization plan worth 12 billion dollars has also been announced, emphasizing local production.
The National Protection Unit (UNP) in Colombia has a budget exceeding 740 billion pesos for 2026, enabling approximately 6,500 protection schemes. This budget supports the hiring of 6,870 new positions, including 6,000 specifically for bodyguards.
The Ministry of Interior formalized these changes under Decree 0020, which reserves over 10% of the new hires for individuals aged 18 to 28. The bodyguard sector also serves as an export market, training professionals for over 12 countries.
The need for security services is driven by ongoing violence linked to FARC factions and drug cartels, necessitating UNP protections for at-risk individuals. The broader defense budget reached around 60 trillion pesos, with a focus on transitioning from importer to regional manufacturer in defense capabilities over the next decade.
