Colorado Study to Repurpose Orphan Wells for Geothermal Energy and Carbon Storage
Gradient Geothermal will support a study by the Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commission to evaluate repurposing orphaned oil and gas wells for geothermal energy production and carbon storage. The study will assess the suitability of these wells for geothermal applications and inform regulatory considerations. A public dataset and final report with findings will be produced.

Gradient Geothermal is collaborating with the Colorado Energy and Carbon Management Commission and the Colorado Energy Office on a study to repurpose orphaned oil and gas wells for geothermal energy and carbon storage. The study will evaluate these wells for their potential in geothermal energy production and examine their alignment with carbon capture efforts.
Engineering evaluations will be conducted on wells from the state's Orphaned Well Program to assess their viability for electricity generation or direct-use applications. The project will produce a public dataset and a final report detailing technical findings and recommendations.
