ComEd Secures $2 Billion in Transmission Agreements Amid Rising Power Demand from Data Centers
ComEd has secured transmission-security agreements totaling $2 billion from customers requesting 6.5 gigawatts of power, addressing a surge in demand from industrial users, particularly data centers. These agreements allow ComEd to draw on letters of credit if power consumption falls short.
The utility faces unprecedented demand, with 75 projects potentially consuming 28 gigawatts, exceeding its peak usage of nearly 24 gigawatts. ComEd plans to increase initial deposits for users needing 50 megawatts or more, with a proposed refundable deposit of $1 million for the first 50 megawatts.
The new agreements facilitate planning for projects expected to commence in 2028 and 2029. Despite new requirements, eight of the 11 users signed the agreements, indicating sustained interest in power supply from ComEd.
