The Comitato No Discarica of Cerro Maggiore held a public meeting on January 23, 2026, to oppose a new project to fill the former Baraggia site with 2.2 million cubic meters of waste, mainly in Cerro Maggiore and partially in Rescaldina. The local administration aims to classify this as environmental rehabilitation despite concerns over contamination from heavy metals and hydrocarbons.

The meeting featured discussions on the historical context of past waste management issues and highlighted the inadequate monitoring and potential health risks posed by increased traffic from waste transport. Experts pointed to poor air quality and emphasized the need for better alternatives, including renewable energy projects. The committee proposed seven alternative initiatives to enhance the area sustainably, including energy storage and agricultural recovery projects.
