Communities in Hwange and Binga Advocate for Responsible Mining Practices
Communities in Hwange and Binga are demanding improved mining practices and local involvement as energy transition minerals gain global demand. The initiative, backed by WWF Zimbabwe and ZELO, aims to ensure community benefits and environmental protection amid rising mining activities.

Communities in Hwange and Binga are urging for responsible mining and enhanced environmental protection as mining activities expand. This comes as a part of a five-year regional initiative funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment and implemented by WWF Zimbabwe and ZELO, which aims to promote sustainable mining practices and community participation.
Stakeholder meetings highlighted concerns over limited local benefits despite increased mining investments, as residents seek tangible improvements in livelihoods. The project aligns with Zimbabwe's National Development Strategy 2, emphasizing environmental stewardship and inclusive governance. The rising global demand for lithium and other critical minerals presents both opportunities and risks, necessitating careful management to ensure community involvement and environmental sustainability.
