Community Council Calls for Expanded Visual Impact Assessment for Statkraft's Ammonia Plant in Lerwick
Tingwall, Whiteness and Weisdale Community Council (TWWCC) has requested a broader assessment of the visual impact of Statkraft's proposed ammonia plant at Tagdale, near Lerwick. This suggestion was made during the environmental impact scoping process, emphasizing the need to evaluate cumulative effects of multiple energy developments in Shetland.
TWWCC expressed concerns about the growing industrialization of Shetland's landscape and noted that the Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA) should consider a wider area than currently proposed. Specific viewpoints for the visual impact analysis include the Shetland Golf Club and the A970 road.
The ammonia plant could begin operations in 2029, producing around 150 tonnes of green ammonia daily, and will be powered through a substation linked to Statkraft's Mossy Hill wind farm. The community council also raised concerns about potential odors from the plant.
