Completion of £11m Garforth Upgrade Enhances Sheffield Beck Water Quality
The £11 million upgrade at Garforth wastewater treatment works has achieved a 93% reduction in phosphorus levels, improving water quality in Sheffield Beck. This project is part of Yorkshire Water's broader effort to enhance the region's environmental standards.

The Garforth wastewater treatment works upgrade has been completed, resulting in a significant reduction of phosphorus levels from 3.25 mg/l to 0.21 mg/l in flows to Sheffield Beck. The £11 million investment, executed by Yorkshire Water and contractor Mott Macdonald Bentley, focused on installing new equipment and optimizing processes to enhance phosphorus removal from treated wastewater.
This improvement will positively affect water quality for over 10km downstream. The reduction addresses environmental concerns, as unmanaged phosphorus can be detrimental to ecosystems and human health. Continued investments like this signal a commitment to regional water quality enhancement.
