Completion of €50 Million Subterranean Data Center in Italy
A €50 million subterranean data center has been completed in Italy’s Val di Non, signaling a growth trend in underground facilities. This project, part of a public-private partnership, aims to enhance data security and leverage natural cooling.

The Intacture project in Val di Non, Italy, has concluded with an investment of €50 million (US$58 million) after two and a half years of construction. Built at a depth of 100 meters, the facility is expected to expand from 800 kW to 6 MW capacity.
The project is a collaboration between the University of Trento and local firms, with over €18 million financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan. Notably, 80% of the data center is underground, utilizing natural cooling at a constant temperature of 12°C.
This development reflects a growing trend in Europe towards subterranean data centers, driven by security and environmental considerations. The rise in demand for such facilities may be influenced by geopolitical tensions, particularly incidents involving data centers in the Middle East.
