Completion of Unitirreno Cable Work in Olbia Enhances Digital Connectivity
The Unitirreno cable project in Olbia has been completed with the landing of the infrastructure in Genoa on February 4. This system links Mazara del Vallo to Genoa over a distance of over 1,000 kilometers, featuring junctions in Rome-Fiumicino and Olbia. It is the first Open Cable system in the Mediterranean with a total capacity exceeding 600 terabits per second. The project involves collaboration between Siportal, Open Fiber, and Unitirreno, creating a strategic digital hub in Sardinia.

The Unitirreno cable project in Olbia was completed with the cable landing in Genoa on February 4. It connects Mazara del Vallo to Genoa via over 1,000 kilometers, with junctions in Rome-Fiumicino and Olbia.
The infrastructure serves as the first Open Cable system in the Mediterranean, supporting 24 pairs of repeated optical fibers and exceeding 600 terabits per second in capacity. The cable connects to Pittulongu and is routed to Siportal's Gallura Data Center, designed as a neutral node for interconnection.
This collaboration integrates Open Fiber's Olbia-Fiumicino section with Unitirreno's submarine network, leveraging DWDM and OTN technologies for increased capacity and resilience. The development generates immediate employment opportunities and strengthens the local economy in Gallura.
