Concerns Over Data Center Growth in Finland and Its Impact on Energy Prices
Data center projects in Finland risk escalating electricity costs and creating limited job opportunities, according to EU parliamentarian Aura Salla. She advocates for stricter regulations on data centers to manage this potential crisis.

Aura Salla, a member of the European Parliament, warns that Finland could face a crisis similar to Ireland's, where data centers account for over 20% of electricity consumption. Fingrid reports requests for data center connections totaling over 50,000 megawatts, exceeding Finland's peak demand by threefold.
Salla argues that only 10% of these requests might be realized, potentially pushing electricity prices higher. She calls for immediate regulatory measures and prioritization of investments. Critics, including investor Risto Siilasmaa, emphasize that attracting foreign data centers could hinder more profitable energy investments.
Salla suggests data centers should not connect to Finland's grid without specific requirements for renewable energy. The government, however, aims to expand overall energy capacity rather than limit data center growth.
