Confusion Over Smart ToD Meters in Pune Leads to Billing Discrepancies
Residents in Pune are facing inconsistent electricity bills following the installation of Time of Day (ToD) smart meters by MSEDCL. With complaints of unexpected cost increases and lack of awareness about the new system, consumer trust in the installation process is at risk, impacting the adoption of energy-efficient practices.

Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) has installed Time of Day (ToD) smart meters in Pune, but many residents report significant billing discrepancies. Instances include bills rising from Rs900 to Rs1,300 monthly after the installation, despite reduced power consumption due to increased outages.
Awareness sessions have been initiated by MSEDCL to educate consumers on the benefits of ToD meters, which reportedly provide discounts based on solar power usage. However, only 9.84 lakh out of 39.71 lakh planned installations have been completed, and consumer confusion remains a barrier to acceptance. The long-term impact of these billing issues could hinder the transition to solar energy and decrease trust in MSEDCL's initiatives.
