Connecticut Prepares for Small Modular Nuclear Reactors Amid Legislative Support
Connecticut lawmakers are advancing efforts to potentially deploy small modular reactors (SMRs) to achieve a zero-carbon electric grid by 2040. While bipartisan support exists, operational deployment is anticipated no sooner than the mid-2030s due to regulatory and safety considerations.

Connecticut is exploring small modular reactors (SMRs) to meet its goal of a 100% zero-carbon electric grid by 2040. These reactors, which can produce between 1 and 300 megawatts, may alleviate rising energy demands from data centers and are designed for urban placement.
Although bipartisan interest and a $5 million grant program have been established, experts suggest that operational reactors are unlikely before the mid-2030s. Despite safety concerns lingering from past nuclear incidents, state officials are optimistic about the technology's potential.
Legislative groundwork has been laid to facilitate the construction of new reactors, but no towns have yet committed to the funding opportunities presented. The success of SMRs will depend on overcoming regulatory hurdles and addressing public safety perceptions.
