ContourGlobal has launched a 202MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in Bulgaria with a total capacity of 500 megawatt-hours (MWh). Located in the Stara Zagora region, the facility is operational and participates in the national electricity market, enhancing power dispatch and integrating renewable energy sources.
The project was financed by the EU's NextGenerationEU initiative through Bulgaria's National Recovery and Resilience Plan and occupies 25,000m² within the Maritsa East 3 coal-fired power plant site. The BESS features 110 battery skids from BYD and 28 power conversion systems. ContourGlobal plans to construct a second 202MW BESS at the same location.
