Controversy Surrounds DC BLOX Data Center Expansion in Birmingham
The proposed AI factory and data center projects in Birmingham and Bessemer have sparked local controversy, especially regarding environmental impacts. DC BLOX asserts the necessity of nearby data storage to optimize data transfer speeds for users.

DC BLOX operates within Birmingham, utilizing approximately 9 megawatts of power, comparable to the consumption of 5,000 homes. Concerns from residents include potential noise and environmental pollution from backup generators, despite the company stating that these generators are only activated during power outages or monthly tests.
Furthermore, new data centers are reportedly implementing closed-loop water systems to reduce water consumption. In contrast, larger hyperscale data centers can demand up to 1,200 megawatts, significantly exceeding the power needs of the DC BLOX facility. The financial responsibility for power upgrades falls on DC BLOX, which mitigates cost transfers to consumers.
