COP31 Sets 35% Electrification Target by 2035 to Accelerate Energy Transition
COP31 President-Designate Murat Kurum announced a global electrification target to increase the electricity share of final energy demand to 35% by 2035. This initiative aims to facilitate the transition from fossil fuels across various sectors, aligning with the Paris Agreement goals.

The COP31 Presidency has established a target to elevate the share of electricity in global energy demand from over 20% to 35% by 2035. This initiative is backed by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and aims to promote clean energy usage in buildings, transport, and industry.
In addition, a goal to halve global waste growth by 2035 was introduced, focusing on the circular economy to reduce emissions. The COP31 Presidency is collaborating with Australia and the IEA to produce reports that will outline pathways to these targets.
This strategic electrification push is anticipated to mitigate economic vulnerabilities related to fossil fuel dependency and promote sustainable practices in urban development. The success of this agenda will depend on international cooperation, particularly with developing nations.
