Copperbelt Energy Corporation Expands Solar Capacity to 230 MW in Zambia's Renewable Energy Transition

HYDRO POWER

Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) is expanding its renewable energy capacity in Zambia, targeting a total of 230 MW by 2026. This includes the commissioning of the 60 MW Itimpi Phase 1 solar plant and ongoing development of the 136 MW Itimpi II solar project, alongside the existing 34 MW Riverside solar facility.

The new solar initiatives aim to diversify energy sources and mitigate reliance on hydropower, which has been impacted by drought conditions. CEC raised about $97 million through a green bond to finance its renewable projects and enhance transmission infrastructure, increasing regional electricity exports by 40 percent, notably to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
